DIGNITY OF LABOUR by IBRAHIM MUSA KIMBA

Looking at the topic “Dignity of Labor”, ones attention will quickly be drawn to the fact that work is a normal and natural phenomenon in the life of man. Hence the need to take any kind of legitimate work with a sense of dignity.
Coming back home to the Akurmi nation, a people with rich cultural heritage, great history, strong and hardworking men and women to continue to be relevant in the socio-economic, cultural and political domains of Lere local government, Kaduna state and Nigeria in general. The youths must throw away the spirit of laziness, and embrace hard work and the dignity of labor, because any nation or people that cannot sustain itself from what it produces, will remain in perpetual slavery to those it depends upon for survival.
Need I to say, this is a wake up call which is in line with the popular saying among the Akurmi people, “Akurmi Ziman; Aninka Ana Sana”. No work is superior or inferior in itself, work is work. it is absolutely wrong to consider any work as high or low because there is dignity in labor and every work has some dignity attached to it.
Hence both the king and the artisans labor are of equal status and importance as far as life is concerned because without the humble farmer who stoops down, soil his hands; the doctor, king and the other so called aristocrats would not have food to eat. Therefore, I belief no work is above the other. It is important to note that from the beginning of life, since the very dawn of civilization, man has been involved in all kinds of work in order to survive.
It is also very important to note that all the religions of the world enjoins man to work diligently and honestly, major and renowned philosophers that have walked the earth also claimed that no work is such that when one is engaged in will undermine his dignity as long as it is an honest and legitimate venture.
The importance of work and the dignity of labor were boldly emphasized by God to man in the Bible when God proclaimed thus “thou shalt eat thy bread by the sweat of thy brow”. God Himself gave the injunction to man to work and to work hard. Therefore it is imperative for “we” the Akurmi youths to heed this noble and clarion call to rise up and work with pride and dignity so that we too will become relevant in nation building process.
Finally, my brothers and sisters dignity of labor simply means that every kind of work has its dignity; it also implies that dignity, progress, relevance and development can only be achieved through hard work. Work whether physical, mental or with sophisticated tools/equipment should be seen as a virtue not derogatory.
