FASHIONISTA with Aguni Hilda Garba (Fashion: The Kurama way )

The dictionary has different definitions for the word “fashion”. According to the Macmillan School Dictionary, fashion is defined as the activity or business that involves styles of cloths and peoples appearances, the state of being popular at a particular  time or it is seen as a particular way of doing something.
We shall be considering the first definition because it is directly related to the topic of our discourse. Looking at fashion the Kurama way I would say it is the activity or business that involves styles of cloths and peoples appearances in conformity to the Kurama tradition, cultures, norms and values.
The Kurama people are known to be fashionable and decent; most especially the typical Kurama woman who is said to be very fashionable as well as decent, and never caught exposing any part of her body. They dress modestly because it is believed that a woman’s body is her pride and dignity, but in our society today we find that the present fashion trend practiced is deprived of modesty and decency as many Kurama young ladies are of the belief that it is only when one exposes her body that one is fashionable.
This is as a result of civilization and socialization, with the advent of western cultural norms and values, the Kurama norms and values have been abused. Every young lady, or should we say 80% of Kurama ladies now a days want to dress or look like what they see on television, thereby adopting western way of dressing which is most a times indecent.
You can dress decently and still be fashionable all you have to do is know your combination, for instance; you could get a good wrapper (Ankara material) and have your tailor design modern day style that do not in anyway expose your body.
The way things are going, I begin to wonder if fashion means nudity. Ladies should not forget that nudity is an expression of low self esteem. Fashion in the Kurama way is basically modesty and decency; once you have that at the back of your mind “Bishiya” you are good to go.
Remember, you can still look good and be decent about it. Parents also have a significant role to play in curtailing this by-product of immorality.
